A number of MITA employees from the Digital Enabling Services Department (DESD) participated in the 5th Projectathon event for the Single Digital Gateway project held in Brussels from the 20th to the 22nd November 2024. This event focused on enhancing the interoperability of digital services, ensuring they are delivered in a user-friendly and efficient way. It all started over three years ago when the Ministry for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects tasked MITA with supporting this innovative endeavour.
The Single Digital Gateway aims to provide online access to essential information, administrative processes, and support services for individuals and businesses engaging with other EU countries. This means that those relocating across EU borders can easily find applicable rules and assistance, allowing them to complete procedures, such as registering a vehicle or applying for pension benefits without needing any physical documents.
At its core, the Single Digital Gateway operates through a Once-Only Technical System, enabling Evidence Requesters in one Member State to automatically retrieve necessary data from others, with the user’s explicit consent. In Malta, we developed an integration layer for service providers, a central preview space and data service for evidence providers, along with dedicated eDelivery access nodes.
The Projectathon itself was a specialized marathon emphasizing peer-to-peer interoperability and compliance testing within a structured framework. It aimed to promote collaboration among member states through the fostering of a positive environment. The tests ensured comprehensive coverage of technical specifications whilst at the same time encouraging cooperation in between as many member states as possible.
MITA’s representatives registered its system in the test collaboration suite and conducted several preparatory tests to verify its readiness. These ranged from simple checks of system time and log access to more complex evaluations of evidence request formats, ensuring compliance with the latest technical specifications. They also ensured that they verified the connectivity of our eDelivery test systems with those of other member states who participated at the event.
As the event commenced, they had to work as a team in an efficient and effective way to succeed. They performed essential production readiness checks with other member states, using a dedicated service provider developed in consultation with the local education sector to simulate enrollment by European citizens in Maltese degree courses. The aim was to clock in as many test cases as possible, testing it out with other participants.
The event proved to be a success for our employees with a number of lessons learned, where they had the opportunity to enhance their technical knowledge and skills, fully preparing them for the next important steps in this transformational journey of innovation.
