mScratch Competition

The mScratch competition was launched in mid-March 2013 by the Malta Information Technology Agency, the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, and the e-Learning Centre within the Directorate for Educational Services (DES) and Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education (DQSE) within the Ministry for Education and Employment.

For this competition students had to create an entry that was related to the EMBED 2013 theme that was ‘Nature’. The competition was aimed at students aged 9 to 15 years. The competition was divided into three categories, these being:

1. Seniors Category: Form 3 to 5;
2. Juniors Category: Form 1 to 2;
3. Primary Category: Year 5 to 6

Participants for this competition hailed both from Malta and Gozo, with a total of 23 teams participating equal to 67 students. The teams came from: 3 state schools, 4 church schools, and 1 independent school.

The aim of the competition was to encourage students to experiment with the Scratch programming environment, and encourage them to be creative. Students had the opportunity to create a project with their school friends and learn skills such as collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking.
