Blata l-Bajda, Malta – [ 29/07/2010 ]: The Commerce Department in collaboration with the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) announces the launch of the new Intellectual Property Office portal (IPO).

The IPO portal, accessible through www.ipo.gov.mt provides citizens and businesses with the possibility to access various services offered by the Intellectual Property Office online. Besides the possibility to register or renew patents, trademarks, designs and copyrights, the new portal includes a vast array of resources and information with the intention of assisting individuals and businesses in understanding and encouraging the securing, utilisation and respect of intellectual property rights.

The facility of online filing and payment of applications for trademarks, patents and designs is available on a 24/7 basis and in the case of intellectual property rights time is of essence since protection of the right starts from the date of filing of application. Applicants also have the facility to upload all the necessary documents, such as patent abstract, description and list of claims online.

The director responsible of industrial property registrations within the Commerce Department, Ms Michelle Bonello, said that the IPO portal affirms the department’s commitment in offering an efficient service to its clients. “We will continue our effort through various other initiatives in our bid to increase and enhance its portfolio of services.” said Ms Bonello.

The IPO portal was funded by the Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications (MITC) and managed by MITA in collaboration with the Commerce Department, and was developed by CCG Limited. MITA helped in establishing and keeping a continuous contact with the website supplier, handling of the overall management of the project and finally ensuring that the website is in accordance with Government policies and standards.

MITA's Chairman, Mr Claudio Grech said that the Agency recognises the importance of innovation and the need to protect it. "The setting up of this portal is yet another eGovernment service which will help both individuals and organisations in getting the right type of protection for their creation or invention. We believe that innovation and product development are crucial and such a service facilitates the process for local industry to develop new ideas and grow their enterprises through innovation." Mr Grech added.
