Cloud Computing

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services), that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort  or service provider interaction.

Key characteristics of Cloud Computing include:
  • on demand self service provisioning;
  • resource pooling;
  • Elasticity;
  • Measured service / pay as you go;

The typical and more prominent service models relate to:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • includes the delivery of virtual infrastructure :

  1. computing resources mainly compute, storage and network;
  3. services such as replication, load balancing, backups, etc.;
  5. and possibly OS;
  • consumer has full control of the virtual infrastructure but not the underlying  physical infrastructure;

Platform as a service (PaaS)
  • includes the delivery of a platform that allows the creation and hosting of applications or information systems;
  • consumer has no control over the underlying infrastructure but only the deployed apps and possibly the application hosting environment;

Software as a Service (SaaS)
  • includes the delivery of applications that are hosted on a cloud infrastructure;
  • consumer may only configure user specific application configuration settings;

The above service models employ various delivery models, the more prominent being:

Public Cloud – is a type of cloud computing platform that is provisioned and managed by a service provider. Services provisioned by the platform are made available to the general public over the Internet.

Private Cloud
- is a type of cloud computing platform that is implemented within the corporate firewall and network, and which is managed by the entity hosting it.

Community Cloud
- is a type of cloud computing platform which employs a collaborative effort in which infrastructure is shared between several organizations. Such implementations normally share common concerns including amongst others security, compliance and jurisdiction irrespective of whether the platform is managed internally or by a third-party and/or hosted internally or externally.

MITA is currently working on a Cloud Computing Project.  What is this project and why is it so important for Malta to go in this direction?
