Energy Consumption at MITA Data Centres

The reporting mechanism adopted by MITA for monitoring power consumption within its MITA Data Centre is based on international de-facto standards namely Green Grid and is in line with the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centre Energy Efficiency.

The metric used to calculate the energy efficiency of a data centre is Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

MITA undertakes monthly power consumption reading and calculates its monthly PUE rating. The below presents the actual monthly PUE for MITA Data Centre during 2015​ ​compared as a benchmark with 2014 and the average ambient temperature. It is worth noting the steady correlation between the average ambient temperature and the PUE. This is principally devoted to elevated use of cooling systems.

The annualised PUE for MITA Data Centre for 2014 was 1.82 while for 2015 it was 1.85. This means that for every 1.85 watts in the utility meter, only one watt is delivered out to the IT load. The 1.85 PUE figure compares well with the average PUE rating for data centres of 1.8, according to a survey of more than 500 data centres conducted by The Uptime Institute.

MITA is an official Participant for EU Code of Conduct for Data Centre Energy Efficiency. 


This Code of Conduct has been created in response to increasing energy consumption in data centres and the need to reduce the related environmental, economic and energy supply security impacts. The aim is to inform and stimulate data centre operators and owners to reduce energy consumption in a cost-effective manner without hampering the mission critical function of data centres. The Code of Conduct aims to achieve this by improving understanding of energy demand within the data centre, raising awareness, and recommending energy efficient best practice and targets.
